·   <b>Established and built </b>the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Communications Department, expanding from one to seven employees. Work resulted in positioning ASM as a primary authority in life sciences and major media coverage of ASM activities, with thousands of online media citations tracked annually.
·   <b>Conceived and implemented</b> the Clean Hands Campaign, award-winning national public education effort about the importance of hand washing in reducing spread of infectious diseases. Reported results of observational surveys of hand washing behavior led to nationwide awareness of ASM. Over the 16 years of the existence of this hallmark program, hand washing awareness and behavior improved significantly. Campaign involved CDC Clean Hands Coalition and received the Silver Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America.
·   <b>Pioneered </b>association’s<b> </b>use of social and interactive media. ASM was recognized by <i>Science</i> magazine as the first scientific society to begin podcasting. Conceived and developed MicrobeWorld.org, award-winning interactive education and information site.
·   <b>Created </b>MicrobeWorld Radio, daily 90-second feature heard on public radio throughout the United States.
·   <b>Led </b>participation in two USA Science and Engineering Festivals, including exhibit design and development, interactive activities, and volunteer participation.
·   <b>Established</b> Milestones in Microbiology program to provide public and professional recognition for sites and programs of historic importance to the field of microbiology.
·   <b>Organized </b>three consecutive “One Health” symposia at annual AAAS meeting focusing on interrelationships among humans, animals, and the environment.
·   <b>Directed ASM’s year-long centennial celebration </b>activities for 1999, in conjunction with volunteer committee, managed a $500,000 budget, coordinated special events, obtained video greetings from the White House, developed exhibits and lecture sessions, and managed selection and marketing<b> </b>of<b> </b>commemorative items.
·   <b>Led logo redesign effort and developed graphics standards</b>, ensuring consistent brand identity across all ASM program units and appropriate use of Society’s name and image.

<b> </b>
Developed communications strategy and served as spokesperson for world’s largest life sciences organization, with an international membership of 38,000 and an annual operating budget of $50 million. Provided strategic counsel to leadership on issues management, message development, and public communications. Promoted strategic partnerships with industry and professional organizations. Coordinated communication of public affairs activities<i> </i>and<i> </i>congressional liaison to members, media, and the public. Conducted media training for volunteer leaders and preparation for congressional testimony and media appearances. Supervised all media relations activities for 11 peer-reviewed journals, two national meetings, numerous conferences, and other activities of the Society. Managed public education web sites and planned and implemented public microbiology education and outreach activities through print, broadcast, and electronic media, and science festivals. Provided strategic leadership for audio/video public outreach programs. Served as features editor of <i>Microbe</i> monthly newsmagazine. Prepared bimonthly newsletter for members. Formulated and administered the annual communications budget, managed departmental staff and contractors, and served as staff liaison to the Communications Committee.
